Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for making our movie night a success!  A big thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped out.

Please save the date, we will be having a Pizza and Art night on Friday, January 31st.  This will give us an opportunity to discuss our play structure project.  We will be providing more details in early January.

The Good Shepherd Parish Advent Family Mass is Thursday, December 12th at 6:45pm.  This is a great opportunity to meet families from the other schools in our parish: Chapel Hill Catholic and Good Shepherd.  Our choir will also be performing and there will be a dessert potluck social following the mass.  If you are coming, please bring a nut free treat to share.  We hope to see you there!

If you are looking to give a gift that keeps on giving, consider giving a magazine subscription.  You can purchase a new (or renew your current) magazine subscription and a portion will go to support the school council’s activities.  Visit https://www.ccrp.ca/orders/index.php?code=ON3119 to place your order.
We wish you a wonderful Christmas season and we hope you and your children have a restful break!

Student Safety

With the winter weather, remember to be a little more careful on the roads around the school.

Our crossing guard is responsible for the safe passage of students and the public through a city warranted assigned area.  We are very lucky that she keeps our children safe as they cross the street.

Please be patient in the area around the school and in the school parking lot.  As the snow banks get higher, please watch out for other children in the area.

All of the SKT students, specifically the ones on our sports teams, would like to thank Myers Orleans Chev Buick GMC for their donation to SKT School Council.  Their donation helped fund the purchase of new jerseys for the school which were much needed since the school name was changed.

Some students from St. Matthew HS were commissioned to create these jerseys for our students.  It was a great collaboration and provided those students with real world experience.

Thanks to all for making this project a success.  We wish all of our sports teams great success with these new jerseys!

Monster Mash 2013 was a Success!

Thank you to all students and their families for coming out to the Monster Mash and making it a success.  It was so nice seeing all the kids in their costumes having a great time.  A big thank you to all of our volunteers (both staff and parents) who came out to help.  We couldn't have done it without you.

Congratulations to Rachel (Kindergarten), Riley (Gr. 1-3), Abby (Gr. 4-6) and our Overall Winner Vivanca for winning the costume contest.  We hope all the children had fun in the costume parade.

The pumpkin auction was also very exciting.  Special thank you to Joel for being our auctioneer again.  Thank you to all of the students and their teachers for making such special pumpkins for the auction.  Here are some photos of the pumpkins:

Also, thank you to Boston Pizza for donating one of the prizes for the costume contest and the Ottawa 67s for donating the tickets that we used for our raffle.

Support the SKT Playground Project!

The SKT School Council is working to improve the school yard by installing a new play structure geared for the Junior students, grade 4-6.  Currently there is only one small play structure in the yard that is designated for K-3 students but as our school population grows, we have identified the need for the Junior students to have their own structure.

We are calling on students and parents to help up in our endeavor!
Council has raised over $8,000 to date for the project but we have a long way to go to reach our goal of $35,000.  Our plan is to tap into as many community grant and sponsorship resources as we can.  If you are able to help with this in anyway please contact Crystal Soames at soames@rogers.com.  You can keep up to date with our progress by visiting the SKT School Council Facebook page or Website .

Show your support and VOTE, it’s FREE!
SKT School Council has entered a contest supported by Aviva Insurance to fund community projects from across Canada.  All we have to do is get the most votes!  To qualify for the semi-finals we we need to be a top 10 entry in the qualifying round.  Once in the semi-finals, the votes are re-set and we begin again.  The top 10 entries qualify for the finals and are awarded $5,000! Aviva then chooses the winners to receive up to $50,000! We could win the entire cost of our project!!!

It’s that easy! All you have to do is:

  1. Register TODAY to vote at www.avivacommunityfund.org/users/registration/register or through Facebook at Facebook.com/AvivaCommunityFund
  2. Vote! Everyone gets 15 votes (one per day) so visit the site often and vote!!! Our entry can be  found at www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf18345
  3. Encourage EVERYONE you know to register and vote!  Anyone in Canada can vote!
Voting begins TODAY Oct 21 and goes through until Nov 4.
Vote everyday to use up all of your 15 votes!

Our goal is to obtain 12000 votes! To do this every student must get 45 votes! You can do this by asking everyone you know to vote once or 3 people to vote everyday!

Strategies to get the most Votes!

  1. 1.  Call or email friends and family TODAY and ask them vote!  Send them the link to our project.
  2. 2.  Parents can post the link on Facebook to spread the word. Write a post everyday to remind people to vote.
  3. 3.  Parents can ask coworkers to join in the voting.
Please help us to reach our goal!

Promote Active Play at Recess!

2013-14 School Council Fundraiser

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This year at St. Kateri, we are excited to introduce our 2013-14 Fundraiser.  In an effort to provide a fundraiser that will include “something affordable for everyone”, at every price point, we are excited to leap ahead of the hectic holiday shopping season.  This year we are going to sell products from NORCARD – a Canadian fundraising company. We want to encourage students and their families to become involved in this event in order to help raise money for our school.

WHY DO WE FUNDRAISE?
This is the main fundraiser for School Council.  Your support helps the school in many positive ways.  In the past, funds raised have paid for the play structure, digital cameras for the school, smart boards, headphones, software programs, ipad protectors, teacher’s supplies, Jungle Sport and the list goes on.
We need your continued support to help us reach our goals so that we can help improve the school and the school experience for your children.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER
Friday September 27th  - The fundraiser officially begins.
Friday October 18th - All money and order forms must be returned to the school.
Orders will arrive at the school within 3-4 weeks of the school placing their order.
Orders will be distributed to families shortly after they arrive.

Parents are asked to collect all money at time of ordering.  No order can be placed without payment.  Please keep the gold (last copy) of the order form.  You will need this to distribute your orders.  Return the other 3 copies and the money envelope to your teacher.

CHEQUES must be made payable to:  St. Kateri Tekakwitha School Council

Included inside each brochure package is a poster listing all of the prizes each child may receive when they reach specific sales targets.  No need to select prizes as they are delivered with your order.  There will also be three class pizza lunch prizes.  PLUS…. each and every student who participates is entered into our GRAND PRIZE DRAW:
One of 2 Polaroid 7” Android tablet worth approx $100.
So, if your child is able to sell at least 1 item, their name will be entered in the draw for one of these prizes.

If you have any questions, please send a note addressed to “SKT School Council” in the agenda and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support.

This is an evening for parents and teachers to meet, visit classrooms and learn about the school year ahead.

If possible, we would like to keep this an "Adult-Only Event" and give the parents valuable one-on-one time with your child's teacher.

We are serving pizza, one slice per person.  We are a green friendly school, so please feel free to bring your own drinking containers.

Pizza, coffee, tea and water will served from 5:30-6:30 in the school gym.  Teachers will be available to meet the parents in the classrooms from 6:30-7:30.

If you have any questions about the event, please contact

skt.council.ocsb@gmail.com or paul.gautreau@ocsb.ca

All of the oldest children at the school should have received a flyer with a detach portion to give us an idea of the number of people attending.  If you have not received the flyer, and are coming, can you please email one of the above email addresses or call the school to let them know that you will be attending.

Hope to see you on Thursday evening!

Fun Fair 2013 was a success!

The SKT School Council would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped make the 2013 Fun Fair such a success.  Even though we had to move indoors due to the rain, it was a wonderful event.

Thank you to all the parents, St. Matt's students, teachers for volunteering to help make it run so smoothly.  Thank you also to the Knights of Columbus from Good Shepherd Parish who barbecued in the rain for us.  The food was wonderful.  Thanks to all who donated food and books for our bake and book sales.

Thank you to all of the parents who donated items for our Basket Raffles.  This was another popular part of the event.  Congratulations to all of our winners: Tori (Car Wash #1), Christine S. (Car Wash #2), Lisa B. (Just for Mom), John C. (Baking), Adam E. (Gardening), Kobner Family (Canada Day), Angelica (Sports), Angela W. (Arts & Crafts), Anita D. (BBQ), and Tiriny (Birthday)!

Thank you to all of the participants in the "SKT's Got Talent" competition.  The judges (Mr. Gauthier, Mrs. Stern and Mrs. McGowan) had a tough job of determining the winners in our two categories: Little Rock Stars (JK to Gr. 3) and the Big Bands (Gr. 4-6) as all of the groups were very strong.  In the end, Julia M (Little Rock Stars) and The Dancing Devils - Ashley & Brianna (Big Bands) were chosen as the winners.

The Art Show is another popular event within the Fun Fair.  We had a great number of entries and the judges chose the following entries as their favourites:

Sean S. (SK)
Anika H. (Gr. 3)

Angelica J. (Gr. 4)

Valerie (Gr. 5)
Thanks also to the Rogers Community Cruiser for coming out and providing Free Timbits and Tim Horton's coffee to us.  It was also quite fun to see Lionel from Boston Pizza, Batman and Rapunzel walking around our halls.

Finally a big thank you to all of the organizations who donated prizes for our Silent Auction.  Bidding was happening right until the close of the auction.

We hope that it won't rain next year, but we learned that we could have the Fun Fair indoors.  It was a tight squeeze, but a lot of fun :)

Fun Fair 2013: How do you win prizes?

Have you ever wondered how to win a prize at the Fun Fair?

Step 1: Get a Games Bracelet
Step 2: Play a Game
Step 3: You will receive a stamp depending on how well you play the Game
Step 4: Repeat Step 2 and 3 until you earn enough stamps for a prize.
Step 5: Trade in your stamps for a prize!

Prizes are traded for using the stamps on your fun fair stamp sheet. The number or stamps you have will de-termine the size of the prize you may claim. If you have 40 stamps you get a large prize, 20 stamps gets you a medium prize, 10 stamps gets you a small prize and less than that will get you a lollipop. Every time you turn in your stamps it will be marked on your bracelet what size of prize you earned. You may only claim 1 of each size of prize, that is 1 large, 1 medium and 1 small no matter how many stamps you have at the end of the night even if you turn in 3 x 40 stamps you are restrict-ed to receiving only one of each size of prize.

For more details go here:  How do you Earn Prizes

Thank you to our Fun Fair Sponsors

Thank you to the following organizations who either donated their time or an item for our 2013 Fun Fair:
